Math Lesson 27: Operations with Absolute Value

So a lot of us know that negative + negative = negative, and that positive + positive = positive, and that negative -/+ positive depends on which number has the greatest absolute value. But there are multiple ways of writing down simple equations, such as -6+4, using absolute value.

So one way we can write this down so that we get -2 is like this: . Now if you think about it, what I did was say that the answer will be the opposite of 6-4. Now, we all know that 6-4 is equal to 2, and the opposite of 2 is equal to -2. So both of these equations match up!

For multiplication and division, the rules are the same. Now, as a side note, we don’t have to make every equation with parentheses, for example, we can write down simply as . No parentheses needed.
