4th-9th Crusade

The 4th crusade started when Richard failed to re capture Jerusalem. Pope Innocent III sent out the cry for a 4th crusade, but the crusade didn’t begin until some years later. A small army gathered, and they went to Venice. The people of Venice thought that they would get paid for their endeavors, but the army didn’t have the funds to pay them. To repay the debt, they plundered European towns to get the money and goods. The Pope was appalled by this, and excommunicated the crusaders. There were multiple other crusades, and on the 6th attempt at a crusade did they capture Jerusalem, but they only held for 15 years. Another popular crusade, the Children’s Crusade, in which children went out to peacefully convert the Muslims to Christianity. They were either killed or sold into slavery.
