What is approximation? Rounding!
Approximation is when you do an operation, such as multiplication or division, and you end up with a whole bunch of decimal places. For the sake of convenience, we just don’t write them all down. Instead, we approximate, or round, to the nearest number.
For example, if we have 2.654613468, then what we can do is round to the nearest, hundred, or the second place from the decimal to the right. Where the 5 is. The way we approximate the value of this number is by looking at the number behind the one to which we are rounding. In this case, we look at the 4.
We all remember the rules of rounding, right? 5 or higher, it goes up. 4 or lower, it goes down. Since the number after the five is 4, we don’t do anything. Instead, we just leave the number at 2.65 and lop off the rest of the numbers. If the 4 had been 8, then we would’ve rounded the number to 2.66. Get my drift?
