Science Lesson 183: Communication on the Internet.

We may think that we communicate through many ways on the internet. Ha! What a joke. We only communicate through two! They’re called email and VoIP. Email you probably heard of, but what is VoIP?

Before I jump in and tell you what in the world VoIP is, I’m going to explain what exactly email is, in a far more technical sense. When you’re typing an email, what you’re doing is using an MUA, or a Mail User Agent. When you send your email, basically, it goes through a bunch of servers which find the location of the recipient, verify that this is actually the one you’re looking for, and the sends it too him.

As you can probably tell, email is IP/TCP dependent, or Internet Protocol and Transmission Control Protocol. IP basically gives an address to a computer, while TCP is in charge of breaking up your data into packets, and shipping it to its destination.

VoIP will be coming up soon!
