Math Lesson 114: Rational and Irrational Numbers

The way you can divide these two numbers into their respective categories is by simply trying to convert them into ratios, or fractions. If they can be converted into fractions, such as the number 5, the number 0.333…., which can be written as 1/3, the number 0.5, etc.

If you can’t, then that number is an irrational number, such as the √(3) or probably the most well known irrational number, π.
