History Lesson 86: Renaissance

The Renaissance is one of the worlds most important time periods. Great advancements were made in geography, astrology, art, and whole bunch of other fields.

But it wasn’t this peaceful time that everybody thinks it is. It came in a time of great political and religious upheaval, since the Inquisition was established during this time. Gutenberg also made his printing press during this time, allowing ideas to spread like wild fire.

Christopher Columbus made his discovery of America during this period, proving that they were wrong about their idea of the Earth being flat, since they thought that Columbus had discovered India.

Copernicus also had introduced his heliocentric theory, a theory that he was prosecuted and killed for. But it is also the idea that we still believe in.

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, and other great painters of the Renaissance were also born, making the paintings more realistic and life-like, using mathematical perspective to paint the paintings.

Mostly, this cultural movement was centered in Italy, but the name Renaissance is a French word meaning re-birth, which is what it really was. Old ideas from philosophers like Plato and Aristotle were rediscovered and printed, re-introducing the idea of Humanism, a philosophy that believes in the genius of man.
