Personal Finance Lesson 124: Scholarships

Scholarships are something we all hope for when we go to college or a university. Paid-for tuition, with absolutely no student debt. Boy, ain’t that something to look forward too! But how do you get one? What types of scholarships are there?

There are four types of scholarships. The first one is a merit based scholarship, meaning a scholarship that you actually earned.  There is a need-based scholarship, which is based on how much you need it (I say we all need it), an athletics based scholarship (self-explanatory) and then a work study (basically, you go back to school to study because your job demands it) scholarship.

Unlike what you might think, the person that presents his/her case the best is the one that gets the scholarship. You might be an all-A student since first grade, but the person that says “I have this many reasons why I should get it, and they are so, so, so, and so” is more likely to get the scholarship.

Another thing that’ll work to your benefit is a recommendation from a source of authority, such as a teacher. That person needs to know you well, and also needs to speak to your strengths.

When applying for a scholarship, you need to write an essay. Make it a killer essay. Many scholarship viewers rely heavily on that essay. Another thing you need to pay attention to are details: deadlines, getting organized, formatting essays, etc.
