Science Lesson 208: Measuring Energy Usage

Although you can get an average statement for how much electricity you’re using exactly from the internet, some of us prefer to know the exact number. Some of us use more electricity than others, after all.

There are two ways to do this. You can connect the cable to a meter, plug the meter into a socket, and then measure how much electricity you use that way. But some of the things you’d like to measure are kind of hard to unplug, such as freezers, fridges, and electrical cookers.

Another thing you could do is use another kind of energy monitor. This monitor uses the magnetism that’s generated by the AC current running through the cables to figure out how much electricity your equipment is using. Pretty neat right?

There is a much easier method, which is to find a label on your device which tells you how much electricity it uses per second. For example, a 100 watt lamp uses 100 joules of electricity per second. Then, you figure out how much you use that appliance on average, and add and/or multiply everything together and that’s what you get!
