Kublai Khan (Lesson57)

Kublai Khan, also known as the Great Khan, was the grandson of Genghis Khan, and also the person who unified the Mongols and the Chinese Empires together.

Kublai Khan was born in the year 1165. He went to war with his father at an early age, and established a reputation for himself as smart, fearless, and strong. His father died when he was 17. His brother gave him some of the Chinese territories that were in the Eastern part of the empire, and also let him be the commander of the operation to unify China and Mongolia. Not satisfied with there progress, Kublai’s brother went into the battle, but was killed by the Chinese defense.

Kublai was elected as khan after his brother, but another one of his brothers, Ariq, disputed the claim, and said that he was the real khan. Kublai later fought and beat him to get his rightful title as khan.

Under his leadership, the Mongols finally managed to conquer China. After he conquered, he let the Chinese run their own show, and they didn’t have to change their religion(s) since that was what Kublai was known for. He governed his nation by the principles that one of his advisors told him: “Your subjects rely on your leadership, and you rely on your subjects support.”

He launched several other attacks on different nations, but failed. He is remembered as the Wise Khan, and also for unifying China and Mongolia together, as well as having trade with the West, through the one-and-only, Marco Polo.
