Math Lesson 78: Scientific Notation, Part II

Although figuring out what sort of numbers scientific notation represents is cool and all, but how do you actually multiply these gargantuan numbers?

The first thing that you do is basically multiply the numbers all by themselves, and then when multiplying the tens together, you just add the exponents together. The entire process will look something like this:

(2 × 104) × (3 × 105) = (6 × 109).

Then there is also a way to find the reciprocal of a scientific notation expression, although it’s not as easy as just plunking a 1 on top of it. The way it works is that it looks something like this:

(2 × 104) => 1/(2 × 104)* => (1 × 100)/(2 × 104)*=>1/2* × 100/104 = 0.5 × 10-5

* fraction

Might look complicated, but just dig into it a little bit longer and try to understand it.
