Essay on Charlamagne

Charlemagne(English: Charles the Great), born Carolus (English: Charles), was born on the day April 2, 742, was one of the best leaders France had ever had. He reconquered the Roman Empire, made an educational renaissance, and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor.

Charlemagne was one of the 2 son of Pepin the Short, who was the Mayor of the Palace, or the one that did all of the real political decisions for the king. Charlemagne was the co-ruler with his father at the age of 26. After Pepin died, he was succeeded by Charlemagne and his brother. Carloman died in the year 768, leaving Charlemagne as the sole ruler of France. The first task that Charlemagne had to do when he became king was to quail a rebellion in Aquitaine. He did so successfully. Charlemagne later married a Lombard princess to strengthen foreign relationships. He later damaged it when he remarried to a different woman. With his second wife, he had 2 children. At the end of his life, he would have 18 children, most of them from different women. He then later attacked the Lombards because the pope wanted to reclaim territory that had belonged to the papacy before the Lombards came. After 2 years of siege, the capital of the Lombard state had been captured, and the people surrendered. He was crowned at the capital with an iron crown. In the year 776, most of the unrest in Italy had sputtered out. now since he was the king of both France and Italy, he was the most powerful man on the continent. He had a famous sword named Joyeuse, and had very good elite body guards, who became famous for their deeds of valor through out the continent. He faced off the Muslims in Iberia, and they had made a surprise attack and killed his rear guard and Roland, an important man to Charlemagne. He had multiple battles against the Saxons, but in the end, he won, and enforced Christianity on them quiet brutally. In fact a rebellion had started up against him, and he had killed around 4500 people. This genocide was known as the Massacre of Verdun. He also appointed a law code to their civilization. In the year 799, Pope Leo II was threatened by the Roman people, and Charlemagne came to the rescue, and in turn, Leo crowned him the Holy Roman Emperor. He died in the year 814.
