The first 2 chapters explain how Robin Hood became an outlaw, and how he gained 2 trusty companions.
The story begins when Robin Hood was going through the woods to get to a competition in a nearby town. He stumbles upon a group of men clad in Lincoln Green. One of the men starts insulting Robin, and he starts to get agitated. Robin immediately places down a bet that he could kill the best deer out of the herd that was near them. The men took up the challenge, thinking that Robin wouldn’t do it, but they were mistaken, and Robin did succeed. They told him that he had just slain the king’s deer, and that he was now an outlaw, and was ridiculed by them. He left and nearly got hit with an arrow that one of the men shot at him. Enraged even further, Robin drew his bow and killed the man that had sent the arrow after him, thus becoming a complete outlaw.
He starts living in the woods, and soon gathers with him other outlaws, who were also wronged by the nobility, and together, they had many adventures. During these 2 chapters, Robin gets 2 stout men when he challenges them to a cudgel (quarter staff) fight.
