In this part of the tale, Henry and the professor make a grand discovery. The professor finally has proof that humans existed during the times of the dinosaurs, since they found bone-yards with human corpses, as well as that of beasts.
The once again stumble on a discovery that erodes all of their fears. They found the way that Arne Saknussemm went! He left his dagger and his initials inscribed in a rock, and so harry and the professor run off to get their guide, and they travel by way of water to that location.
They find the tunnel that Arne must’ve went through, but this time, it was blocked off by a solid wall of granite. They hade to make a big hole in it, so that they could place the gunpowder in there and blow it up.
This works, to an extent. The force of the explosion is so great that the water goes into the tunnel, and with it, the trio of explorers. They continue through this tunnel for some time, before they start falling into a shaft. The water, having reached the shaft, now is naturally going upwards. This means that the little raft with the puny little humans on it are at the receiving end of this scenario.
While they were still flowing through the tunnel, all of their supplies were lost. So now, all they had left to do was sit. And wait. And starve.
