In this part, Henry finds himself all alone, underneath the Earth. He had been so transfixed with the granite and the colors that it made when light bounced off of it, that he stopped following the little stream of water, and with it, his companions.
Once he realized this, he tried to find his way back, only to find himself even more lost than before. At one point, he fell down, causing his flashlight to go out, since the device back then was very complex, and required the pieces in a certain order.
Once the light went out, he ran around like a madman, banging himself against the rocks and the walls in his path. He finally passed out from all of the bangs and scrapes he received. The next time he awoke, he thought that he heard whispering, only to find out that it was the acoustics of the walls magnifying the voice of his uncle and their guide.
They talked back and forth, and even determined the amount of distance between them. Henry, finding out which way he needed to go, went that way, and jumped down a tube. He nearly got killed a thousand times by the rocks he sent cascading after himself.
After several days, Henry recuperates his strength, and his uncle shows him the underground sea. They even find signs that life had existed. They find gigantic mushrooms, which they can use for fuel for a fire, which they can use to make a real breakfast: eggs and coffee.
Hans, after the breakfast, starts working on a raft, that will allow them to cross this gigantic sea. After a while and the combined strength of the three men, they finally manage to get the raft into water, to start their next great adventure.
